The battle for the eastern city of Bakhmut has intensified as Russian troops attempt to seize the small but strategically important city. Bakhmut is considered to be one of the few places where Russia has been going forward rather than backward since the summer. Ukraine’s forces have this week repelled two Russian offensives in the direction of Bakhmut from the city of Soledar. According to Russian pro-war bloggers, Moscow’s forces gained control of Zaitseve, a key settlement south of Bakhmut last week. While Russia and Ukraine have both heavily used artillery shells in Bakhmut, both the sides have managed to gain only a few metres. Why the battle of Bakhmut is important for Vladimir Putin?
