10 Brilliant Movies Under 90 Minutes
Roger Ebert famously said, "No good movie is too long, and no bad movie is too short." While epics such as Titanic, Lawrence of Arabia, Seven Samurai, Avengers: Endgame, and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King run well over three hours, many great films tell gripping stories in less than half the time.
A short runtime doesn't mean a movie is shallow. Some films were trimmed by studios, but others deliberately compress storytelling to striking effect, delivering complete, powerful narratives in under 90 minutes—perfect when you want a quick but satisfying watch.
Highlights include Evil Dead II (1987, 85 minutes), which amplifies Sam Raimi's gore and unhinged slapstick into something cartoonishly fun; Tangerine (2015, 88 minutes), Sean Baker's microbudget iPhone-shot slice of life following two transgender sex workers on Christmas Eve; and The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993, 85 minutes), a jam-packed holiday classic that was originally released under Touchstone over fears it might frighten children.
