10 Game of Thrones Episodes That Still Outclass House of the Dragon
Collider published a piece on Feb. 1, 2026 in which writer Tyler B. Searle lists 10 Game of Thrones episodes he says still “go harder” than anything in HBO’s House of the Dragon. Searle argues the early seasons of Game of Thrones were praised for their high production values and storytelling, even as the series later declined after surpassing George R.
R. Martin’s books and ended with a widely disliked final season. The list highlights spectacle and cinematic set pieces, including “The Spoils of War” (the show’s first use of an adult dragon against an army, a Dothraki charge and Bronn’s scorpion bolt), “Hardhome” (a slow, horror-driven build to a devastating attack and the Night King’s silent demonstration), and “Battle of the Bastards” (battle staging and near-suffocation intensity).
Searle also emphasizes episodes built around shock and emotional payoff: “The Door” (the Hodor tragedy and the Night King breach), “The Rains of Castamere” (the Red Wedding’s sudden calamity), “Baelor” (Eddard Stark’s execution), and “The Winds of Winter” (the Sept of Baelor wildfire and Bran learning Jon’s parentage).
Other entries praised for craft and character work include “Blackwater” (the Wildfire explosion and night of green fire), “The Watchers on the Wall” (focused, character-driven Wall battle), and “The Laws of Gods and Men” (Tyrion’s rigged trial and Peter Dinklage’s climactic speech).
