Sherlock Holmes holds a Guinness World Record as the most portrayed literary (human) character in film and TV, appearing more than 250 times across more than 75 actors. From silent pictures to modern streaming, performers have repeatedly reshaped Doyle’s detective, sometimes becoming the definitive Holmes for a generation.

The character often reads as cold and arrogant on the surface yet vulnerable underneath; the recent Young Sherlock, with Hero Fiennes Tiffin as a 19‑year‑old Holmes, is one more interpretation added to a vast canon. Ian McKellen’s turn in Mr. Holmes (2015), adapted from Mitch Cullin’s A Slight Trick of the Mind and directed by Bill Condon, reframes the detective as a retired 93‑year‑old who keeps bees and struggles with memory loss.

The film is less a traditional mystery than a meditation on aging and identity, and McKellen gives Holmes an unexpected vulnerability and human depth. Christopher Lee played Holmes in Sherlock Holmes and the Deadly Necklace (1962) and also portrayed Mycroft in other projects.
