10 Movies Likely to Appear at the 2027 Oscars

Mapping the road to the Academy Awards stretches across a full year and sometimes longer. CODA premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival — 14 months before it won Best Picture in 2022. Fall festivals like Venice, Telluride and Toronto remain key launchpads, but Cannes has also proven decisive: Parasite bowed there in 2019 and Anora in 2024.

Some titles will inevitably fade; last year many expected Wicked: For Good and Jay Kelly to reach the Dolby Theater and they did not. Here are films carrying buzz or prestige credentials that could be in contention. Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is his first film since Oppenheimer, a large-scale take on Homer’s epic led by Matt Damon and a cast that includes Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya and Charlize Theron.

Josephine won both the US Dramatic and Audience Awards at Sundance and stars Gemma Chan, Channing Tatum and young Mason Reeves; it was picked up by Sumerian Pictures.
