10 Ongoing Mystery Thriller Series That Keep Getting Better
Mystery thrillers often work well as miniseries, wrapping a single story in eight or so episodes, but some continue to deepen and expand across multiple seasons. Shows such as Mike Flanagan's The Fall of the House of Usher and the one-season HBO drama The Undoing exemplify the miniseries form, while other series build on their strengths and improve over time.
Severance (Apple TV) pairs sci-fi and psychological tension, centering on a biotech procedure that splits work and home memories; Season 2 pushes the story further as Mark's "innie" develops a sense of self and sets up a third season. Pluribus (2025) from Vince Gilligan follows Carol, one of the few immune to a hive-mind virus, and its slow-burn tone and strong performances leave room for more.
Paradise (Hulu) blends political thriller and post-apocalypse drama and is planned as a three-season arc, while The Night Agent evolved from rough action to a more refined mystery thriller by Season 3 and has been renewed for Season 4.
