Reporting by Nbc notes the network has been the exclusive broadcaster of the Summer Games since 1988 and the Winter Games since 2002, and that NBCUniversal boasts a 94-year record of delivering Olympics updates to audiences. The network pioneered live event coverage via satellite at the 1964 Tokyo Games, becoming the first station to transmit live color television programming by satellite overseas to the United States for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies.

NBC also conducted interviews during those Games, including a conversation between Bill Bradley and gold medalist Don Schollander, and Jim Simpson became the first TV broadcaster to report live from Japan via satellite, according to the National Sports Media Association.

NBC returned to Olympic broadcasting for the 1988 Seoul Games, producing 176.5 hours of coverage and earning seven Emmys.
