10 unexpected items that can help you during a blizzard
A blizzard has knocked out power, canceled flights, and closed roads across much of the Northeast. Beyond standard emergency supplies like food, water, and first aid, common household items can be surprisingly useful during heavy snowfall. Keep cash on hand in case ATMs fail and stores can’t accept cards.
Fire extinguishers are important year-round; home fires rise during the cold months, so use candles, fireplaces, and space heaters with care—place space heaters on a flat, hard surface at least 3 feet from anything flammable and never use an oven to heat your home.
If you get stranded, newspapers and maps can be crumpled and used as insulation under clothing, while sand, rocks, cat litter, floor mats, or even pine needles can improve tire traction.
