People reports that a 12-year-old boy in England, Zac Howells, received the West Mercia Police Chief Constable Commendation after he saved his mother, Nicola Crump, when she lost consciousness while driving.

According to West Mercia Police, during the Dec. 14 incident Crump lost consciousness with her foot still on the gas; Zac took control of the steering wheel, guided their vehicle onto grass to stop it and immediately called emergency services. Neither Zac nor his mother were injured, and on Jan. 14 West Mercia Police Chief Constable Richard Cooper presented Zac with the Commendation. The Chief Constable Commendation is awarded to people “who demonstrate exceptional bravery, outstanding courage and actions that go beyond what is normally expected,” WMP explained.

Cooper said when Zac and Nicola visited WMP’s headquarters, “I am delighted to present Zac with this award today following what must have been an extremely frightening experience for such a young boy.” He added, “For a 12-year-old to react in such a calm and mature manner is magnificent, and I would like to express my gratitude for his actions that day.” “His display of bravery certainly extinguished any danger to them both, but also that of other members of the public who were on the road that day,” Cooper added.
