Since 1929 the Academy has rewarded what it considers the best cinematic offerings of a given year, and the Oscars have become the most prestigious awards in the film industry. That prestige, however, has not guaranteed quality: some Oscar winners are serviceable at best and outright bad at worst.

The list collects winners that have aged poorly or never quite worked. Early talkies such as Disraeli (1929) showcase historical significance — George Arliss is excellent — but little else holds up. In Old Arizona (1928) is marred by a brownface performance that has not aged well, and One Night of Love (1934) earned technical honors for its audio yet has since been described as clichéd and boring.

More recent entries include films whose technical achievements outshine their storytelling. The Golden Compass (2007) won Best Visual Effects while washing out the source material’s themes. The Wolfman (2010) and The Nutty Professor (1996) both earned makeup Oscars despite weak overall films.
