Movieweb reports that 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple has earned a 96% Tomatometer score, the highest rating in the franchise.

Directed by Nia DaCosta and expanding the universe created by Danny Boyle and Alex Garland, the sequel stars Ralph Fiennes, Jack O'Connell, Alfie Williams and Erin Kellyman. Critics have lavished praise: HeyUGuys' Linda Marric called it "harrowing, thoughtful, and impeccably crafted," The Hollywood Reporter's David Rooney highlighted Hildur Guðnadóttir's score as ranging "from solemn, quasi-ecclesiastical passages to gut-churning, droning soundscapes," and The Film Maven's Kristen Lopez described it as "one of the first great movies of 2026." Reviewer Eric Goldman scored the film nine out of 10 and wrote that DaCosta and Garland deliver "the best installment in the 28 Days Later series (so far)."

Last year's 28 Years Later earned an 89% critics score and 63% audience score and grossed $151.3 million worldwide from a $60 million budget. The Bone Temple is due January 16, 2026, and the coverage notes that audiences this weekend will show whether the sequel broadens its appeal and boosts its January box office, even as several reviews already call it the "movie of the year"—a judgment the reporting says may be premature.
