3 Decades Later, Tom Cruise's 4-Year Passion Project Is Back on Streaming

2025 was a big year for Tom Cruise, who played Ethan Hunt for the last time in Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning. His career began with mostly original roles, but recent years have been dominated by franchise work, including a return as Pete Mitchell in Top Gun: Maverick.

He is confirmed to return for a third Top Gun, but other projects come first; later this year he will star in Digger, his first original action movie in nine years from Alejandro G. Iñárittu, with Jesse Plemons and Emma D'Arcy co-starring. One of Cruise's original signature roles came 30 years ago in Jerry Maguire, a drama about a successful sports agent stripped of his wealth and title who leaves the industry with only his top client.

Cuba Gooding Jr. co-stars as that client and won an Oscar for his performance; Cruise earned an Oscar nomination and Cameron Crowe's script, which took four years to write, also received an Oscar nod.
