41 Years Later, Stephen King's Forgotten Werewolf Movie Finds a New Lair
Stephen King wrote the screenplay for Silver Bullet, a 1985 werewolf film adapted from his novella Cycle of the Werewolf and directed by Daniel Attias. Set in the normally quiet town of Tarker's Mill, the story follows a string of unexplained murders that leave vigilantes dead and the town hunting for a killer.
A young wheelchair-using boy named Marty briefly encounters a werewolf and, with his sister and Uncle Red, sets out to capture it. The feature earned $12.3 million on a $7 million budget and divided audiences: critics gave it a 43 percent Rotten Tomatoes rating while fans rated it 56 percent.
Viewers criticized the werewolf design and the film's tonal shifts between coming-of-age moments and R-rated horror, but its performances and narrative have helped it grow into a cult classic. Silver Bullet is available to stream on Tubi and became available there on March 1.
