Nytimes reports that a mechanical failure at the Gore Mountain resort in the Adirondacks left guests in about 20 gondolas hovering above the snow and that at least 67 people were stuck for several hours; the guests were safely rescued, resort management said.

The Olympic Regional Development Authority said the gondola stopped after a tower wheel assembly moved out of alignment and triggered a safety sensor. The resort’s mountain operations team and rangers from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation carried out the evacuation, and authorities reported no injuries.

Rescuers climbed lift towers, traversed cables and rappelled into cabins, then used ropes and vests to lower passengers to the snow. The Department of Environmental Conservation said it received a call at 9:06 a.m. and that the evacuation was completed before 2 p.m.; the gondola was running again on Thursday.
