Calls for a third season of Mindhunter persist, and David Fincher’s influence on serial-killer cinema is evident. One film on Netflix that echoes that lineage is Holy Spider, but it is scheduled to be removed from the service on April 7. Holy Spider premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and competed for the Palme d'Or before its theatrical release in 2022.

Inspired by a real-life killer who stalked women in Mashhad and became known as the “Spider Killer,” the film is headlined by Zar Amir Ebrahimi, who won the Best Actress Award at Cannes for her turn as a journalist investigating the murders. Directed by Ali Abbasi — whose credits include The Apprentice and episodes of The Last of Us — the film draws comparisons to Zodiac in its examination of societal decay.

Abbasi said, “My intention was not to make a serial killer movie. I wanted to make a movie about a serial killer society.
