Movieweb reports that HBO's Game of Thrones spin-off A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which premieres on Jan. 18, 2026 on HBO, could set a franchise record for total seasons.

The first season adapts George R.R. Martin's 1998 novella The Hedge Knight from his Tales of Dunk and Egg series, and the series already has the source material for two more runs. Creator Ira Parker has said Martin has shared 10–12 more outlines for Dunk and Egg novellas with the showrunner, but Martin has not released a Dunk and Egg novella since 2010 and has vowed not to write anything else until he finishes The Winds of Winter. The show is smaller in scale, with shorter episodes, a lighter tone and a smaller budget; it has already been renewed and HBO aims to have Season 2 out by 2027.

Whether the series can actually set a record will depend on consistent audience response and viewership. The prequel could surpass the Dance of the Dragons series, which ended at four seasons, and would then need to exceed Game of Thrones' eight-season run to claim the franchise record, but the long-term fate of the adaptation remains uncertain given the gaps in new Dunk and Egg material.
