The Trial of Seven begins as Dunk gathers six champions, including Prince Baelor, who takes charge and instructs them to stay on their horses while he handles the Kingsguard. Dunk hesitates at the charge until Egg urges Thunder forward; his shield is broken, a lance stabs his side, and he is knocked into the mud, underlining that he is not an unbeatable hero.

The episode then takes an extended flashback to Dunk’s youth during the Blackfyre Rebellion. As an orphan in Flea Bottom he and his friend Rafe scavenge a battlefield, clash with a Goldcloak named Alester, and witness Rafe’s murder after Alester slits her throat.

A drunken Ser Arlan intervenes, killing Alester and later taking Dunk as his squire, a backstory that explains Dunk’s drive to defend the smallfolk but also interrupts the trial’s momentum. When the show returns to the Trial of Seven, fog obscures much of the action and the sequence narrows to Dunk’s brutal fight with Aerion.
