A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms review: intimate, human take on Westeros
Movieweb's Julian Roman writes that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, HBO's third Game of Thrones franchise entry based on George R. R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg, offers a six-episode, intimate story that brings humor and fellowship to Westeros.
The series, set 90 years before the War of the Five Kings, follows the towering Dunk (Peter Claffey) as he seeks to prove himself a true knight and encounters the spirited stableboy Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell). Showrunner Ira Parker leans into raunchy laughs and grounded, human storytelling while exploring classism and socioeconomic inequality; action and jousting scenes earn praise for stunt choreography, aerial camera work and practical effects. Egg’s true identity is described as pivotal to later twists, a detail the review notes without spoiling it.
The review flags a recurring flaw: awkward flashbacks that can undercut tension, and suggests Parker should mitigate their use. The series premieres Jan. 18, 2026 at 10 p.m. ET on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max, and it has already been renewed for a second season.
