Warning: The following contains SPOILERS for the A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 1 finale. In episode six, “The Morrow,” Ser Duncan “Dunk” the Tall wins the trial of seven against Prince Aerion Targaryen but walks away badly wounded; Prince Baelor dies shortly after, allowing Prince Daeron Targaryen’s dragon dream to take hold.

In the aftermath, Lyonel Baratheon tends to Dunk and offers him a place at Storm’s End, an invitation Dunk refuses. Prince Maekar then proposes that Dunk take Prince Aegon “Egg” Targaryen as his squire. After wrestling with his past, Dunk accepts on the condition that he and Egg travel the road together rather than station at Summerhall, and the two ride off to Dorne as Maekar and the host depart Ashford.

The episode turns on identity and grief: Dunk confronts the long shadow of Ser Arlan of Pennytree, grieves his losses, and chooses to become a kinder mentor than the man who shaped him.
