Several A-list guests at the Vanity Fair Oscar party at LACMA said the lighting left them looking worse than usual, calling it “crazy-bright” and “unforgiving.” Some described standing “under klieg lights,” with one attendee joking about early menopause and another complaining of hot flashes.

The event had been retooled with a smaller guest list, less outside press and a new venue. Attendees noted a sharp contrast with the bash’s previous setup in Beverly Hills at the Wallis Annenberg Center, which was famed for “sublime,” flattering red carpet lighting.

A longtime party fixture said the meticulously calibrated setup was once “the secret of the Oscar party’s success,” adding that when you posed there “it was like magic.” This year’s illumination was likened to “being shot in extremely high-def,” and some guests said it revealed excess pounds and wrinkles that used to be hidden.
