'A Minecraft Movie 2' Adds Kirsten Dunst to Sequel Cast

Warner Bros. has cast Kirsten Dunst in A Minecraft Movie 2; she will play the role of Alex, one of the nine default skins from the original game who is commonly seen working with Steve, the character Jack Black played in the first film. Many expect stars like Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Danielle Brooks, and Emma Myers to reprise their roles in the sequel.

The first A Minecraft Movie, directed by Jared Hess, became a surprise hit in 2025, grossing over $960 million worldwide and ranking among the year’s top five highest-grossing films behind Ne Zha 2, Avatar: Fire and Ash, Zootopia 2, and Lilo & Stitch. Warner Bros.

greenlit production on the follow-up, which is scheduled to hit theaters on July 23, 2027. Dunst previously said in August 2025 that her children loved the first movie and joked she would “like to make a pile of cash” by joining the sequel.
