Nier: Automata has sold more than 10 million copies since its 2017 release, and Square Enix marked the milestone with a YouTube video whose final seconds display the message: "Nier: Automata to be continued…" Shortly after the video appeared, Geoff Keighley shared a screenshot of that on X.

Series creator Yoko Taro also reposted the YouTube clip on his X account, thanked players for their support, and is taking part in the game's ninth-anniversary livestream. The series did briefly continue on mobile in 2021, though that title went offline in 2024, and fans have long voiced frustration that Automata never received a traditional console or PC follow-up.

Last November, Taro said he had been working on games that repeatedly ended up canceled.
