A24 to Remake Jean-Claude Van Damme's Bloodsport with Michaela Coel
A24 is remaking Bloodsport with Michaela Coel set to write and direct. The original 1988 film gave Jean‑Claude Van Damme his breakout role and is remembered for his performance, its action, the style‑vs‑style matchups it popularized, and its soundtrack. The story follows Dux as he enters an underground Hong Kong tournament to honor his dying mentor, Senzo Tanaka, facing a roster of international fighters and culminating in a brutal showdown against the reigning champion, Chong Li (Bolo Yeung).
The 1988 feature was directed by Newt Arnold. Coel, known for I May Destroy You, Chewing Gum and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, will make this her third collaboration with A24. She has said she has long been in awe of fighters and is excited to explore their discipline, intensity and isolation with A24.
Producer Marc Toberoff noted that Bloodsport introduced audiences to the gritty aesthetic of mixed martial arts and expressed a desire to bring back the high‑energy tournament format.
