Adam Scott Stars in Damian McCarthy's Horror Hokum
Adam Scott headlines Neon’s supernatural folk horror Hokum, whose first full trailer has begun circulating. The preview offers striking, unsettling imagery but little plot detail; it suggests Scott plays an author who travels to Ireland to scatter his dead parents’ ashes and encounters a malign presence.
Damian McCarthy wrote and directed Hokum. His earlier films Caveat (2020) and Oddity (2024) earned strong reviews, with Rotten Tomatoes scores of 81% and 96% respectively; both were made for less than $1 million and were developed in a converted barn in Cork County.
McCarthy’s work is noted for slow-burning dread, memorable ghouls, and effective use of shadow and claustrophobia. Hokum reportedly had a $25 million budget, which appears to have allowed more elaborate scares and a more polished look while preserving McCarthy’s unsettling approach to fear.
