Adrian Grenier says he was passed over for The Devil Wears Prada 2 because of backlash to his character, Nate Cooper. He added that he would have liked to return; the sequel will see Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep reprise their original roles. Fans labeled Cooper an unsupportive, immature and selfish boyfriend, a reaction that surprised Grenier when memes and criticism emerged.

He has said he didn’t initially see the character’s subtleties, but after reflection acknowledged the validity of those grievances. In the first film, Andrea Sachs’ personal life suffered as she pursued her demanding job, and though she and Cooper broke up, they reunited briefly before he moved to Chicago for a chef position.

Grenier said the lack of a return was disappointing and suggested it leaves room for a Nate-focused spinoff.
