Aidy Bryant Based SNL's 'Joan Song' on a Real Song About Her Dog
In 2019 Aidy Bryant starred opposite Harry Styles in SNL's musical pretape "Joan Song," first performed on November 16, 2019 during Season 45. Bryant plays Joan, whose boyfriend Steve left her for someone else; her only real companion is a Chihuahua named Doug who has become her new boyfriend, though Joan insists there's nothing inappropriate going on.
The sketch even features the Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally pop star eating trash can garbage and cowering at the sight of a vacuum. As Joan sings, "Doug likes romance," and recalls showing him pictures of Paris, France and sharing "a bowl of meatballs and spaghetti." The Chihuahua then morphs into Styles wearing Doug's little collar and sweater, singing as Doug: "Joan, I love you," "I love the way you feed me ham / You're my life, my love, my everything / I love you just the way you am." Bryant says the song began as an improvised recording she made while she was "lying in bed" thinking about her dog; she remembered, "I love him," and recorded it into her phone.
