Apple this week released the second‑generation AirTag, an updated Bluetooth tracker that keeps the same MSRP as the previous model: $29 for a single AirTag and $99 for a four‑pack, according to ZDNet. Apple says the AirTag 2 offers more precise tracking and a louder speaker, but many rumored changes did not materialize.

Contrary to rumors noted by ZDNet, the AirTag 2 does not feature a different shape or a built‑in loop, so you still need a separate accessory to attach an AirTag to keys, wallets, bags and similar items. The new AirTag expands Precision Finding range by about 50%, meaning an item that the first AirTag could be tracked precisely from about 18 feet might be trackable from about 27 feet with the AirTag 2.

That improvement is attributed to a newer ultra‑wideband (UWB) chip similar to the ones in newer iPhones, and Apple says the improved Precision Finding is only available on iPhone 15 or later (excluding the iPhone 16e). Precision Finding on the AirTag 2 is also compatible with Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 or newer.

Apple also says the AirTag 2’s speaker is louder than before, which should make it easier to find trackers hidden in drawers, closets or bags. ZDNet’s writeup recommends the AirTag 2 for people who need the extended Precision Finding range or a louder speaker. The first‑generation AirTag remains an option for many buyers.
