At just 14 years old, AJ Robinson earned a near-instant turn from John Legend on The Voice: Battle of Champions. The country singer from Cataula, Georgia strummed an acoustic guitar and sang Lainey Wilson’s “Watermelon Moonshine,” showing off an airy, rich tone that left the coaches surprised his voice matched his age.

Kelly Clarkson asked, “Fourteen years old?” after Robinson explained he was born the same year The Voice began in 2011, and he admitted he’d been counting down the days to audition. He’s also a dancer, plays piano and taught himself guitar, drums, harmonica, banjo and mandolin — a clear sign he’s already a multi-instrumentalist at a young age.

Clarkson offered practical advice about using more breath for control, while Adam Levine joked that Blake Shelton had “ruined” him when it comes to losing country singers. Legend said he pushed his button for Robinson’s floating, rich tone that sounded “richer than it should sound when you’re only 14 years old,” and welcomed him onto Team Legend.
