Netflix's new action thriller War Machine stars Alan Ritchson and features Dennis Quaid, Esai Morales, and Jai Courtney. The film adds a sci‑fi element to familiar military territory, putting Ritchson against an otherworldly robot that serves as the primary antagonist.

The story follows a team training to become Army Rangers, with the first act fuelled by brutal Ranger exercises and Ritchson's character, 81, refusing to quit. On their final training mission the recruits are sent to destroy downed transport but instead find a crash‑landed combat robot; their attempt to destroy it appears to wake the machine, which quickly dispatches several recruits and keeps them on the run across mountains, forests and rivers.

War Machine makes a deliberate choice that alters the usual combat dynamic: because the soldiers are on a training mission they lack ammunition and many standard tools. They lose their radio early, the training explosives fail against the robot, and blank‑firing adapters are visible on rifle muzzles during the initial attack.
