Aleutian Lady crew tried to save 'Deadliest Catch' star Todd Meadows
The crew aboard Captain Rick Shelford’s Aleutian Lady tried to save 25-year-old deckhand Todd Meadows after he went overboard in the Bering Sea on Feb. 25. Deckhand Trey John Green III said the sea was calm and visibility was high that late afternoon, though the water and air were near or below freezing.
The US Coast Guard investigation is ongoing and officials have not determined the exact circumstances of his death. Green recalled seeing Meadows floating and keeping his finger on him as the boat turned. Rescue swimmer Steve Porter entered the water but the crane harness broke; crew members then lowered a life sling and Meadows partly got into it before falling back and becoming unresponsive.
They pulled him aboard after "three or four minutes" in the water, by which point he was "turning blue" and foam was coming from his mouth and nose. Crew members began CPR immediately and used the vessel’s AED, continuing attempts for about 30 to 45 minutes until the captain said efforts were not going to work.
