Alexander S. Vindman, a retired Army lieutenant colonel who was a top witness in President Trump’s first impeachment, announced on Tuesday that he is running for the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate in Florida to challenge Senator Ashley Moody. Mr. Vindman released a campaign video that includes footage of recent shootings, including the killing of a nurse, Alex Pretti, in Minnesota, and the earlier shooting of Renee Good, and in which he says, "Today our country is in chaos" and refers to "thug militias attacking citizens." The video also revisits his firing in 2020, with Mr.

Vindman saying, "This president unleashed a reign of terror and retribution," and showing an image of him testifying in his Army uniform, "swearing an oath to tell the truth about a president who broke his." Florida has trended away from Democrats in recent years and was won by Mr.

Trump by 13 percentage points in 2024, making the seat a difficult contest for Democrats; the article says the expense of campaigning in such a large state has been prohibitive. Still, Mr. Vindman brings national name recognition and could be a strong fund-raiser, the reporting adds.

Mr. Vindman first drew attention in 2019 when he testified about the call between Mr. Trump and President Volodymyr Zelensky that led to Mr. Trump’s impeachment, saying he had been alarmed by the exchange.
