Alexis Mac Allister struck in the 96th minute to hand Liverpool a 1-0 victory at the City Ground. He had an effort ruled out by VAR two minutes earlier for contact with his elbow, but pounced on a Virgil van Dijk knock-down to secure the late winner. Nottingham Forest dominated the opening period.

Callum Hudson-Odoi ghosted in behind Dominik Szoboszlai inside two minutes, only for Alisson Becker to rush off his line and smother the chance, and the home side kept Liverpool pinned back for much of the half without converting several good openings. Florian Wirtz was withdrawn after picking up an injury in the warm-up, with Curtis Jones coming in and later missing what was at that point Liverpool’s best opportunity.

Stefan Ortega produced a key save to deny Hugo Ekitike’s header, while substitutes including Rio Ngumoha added energy and helped create late openings. Mohamed Salah was substituted after a subdued display and is now nine games without a goal.
