Collider reports that Season 6 of the historical drama All Creatures Great and Small, which aired in the U.K. last fall, is finally coming to PBS in January for U.S. viewers and returns with a noticeably more emotional tone.

The new season jumps forward to 1945 and keeps its focus on the small community of Darrowby, following James Harriot (Nicholas Ralph), Siegfried Farnon (Samuel West) and the staff of Skeldale House as they confront the war's aftermath. Season 6 is short — six episodes plus the yearly Christmas special — and leans into character-driven stories: Tristan (Callum Woodhouse) copes with his wartime experiences, Siegfried faces introspection, Mrs. Hall (Anna Madeley) gains confidence, and James is often serving others' arcs rather than receiving new development himself. The season also adds new faces, including Charlotte Beauvoir (Gaia Wise) and Mrs. Stokes (Susan Hilton) with her goat Hilda.

The show keeps its calming veterinary-practice core even as it explores heavier, gut-wrenching moments tied to World War II. Season 6 is reported to premiere tonight on PBS MASTERPIECE, and the series has been confirmed to return for two more seasons in the years to come.
