Ally Sentnor’s strike gives USWNT narrow win over Canada
On a rain-soaked night in Columbus, Ally Sentnor’s second-half goal lifted the U.S. women’s national team to a 1-0 victory over Canada. The matchup extended a rivalry that has seen the sides meet 68 times, with the Americans holding a 54-4-9 record. Emma Hayes fielded a veteran starting XI that averaged 47.3 caps, led by Rose Lavelle with 117.
The first half ended scoreless as the U.S. controlled possession and limited Canada to three shots; at halftime Sam Coffey urged the team to be "more clinical in the final third." In the 54th minute Lavelle swung in a corner and Sentnor settled the lofted service before burying a left-foot finish.
Sentnor said the team wanted a tight contest to work on improvements, and the goal proved decisive as the U.S. continued to create chances while keeping Canada off the scoresheet. The Americans finished with 16 shots to Canada’s six. GOAL’s player ratings highlighted Sentnor as the top performer (8/10).
