American Gods: Dark Fantasy Series Now Free on Tubi

American Gods premiered on Starz in 2017 as a television adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s 2001 novel. Developed by Bryan Fuller and Michael Green, the show ran for three seasons before it was canceled. Ricky Whittle stars as Shadow Moon, who is released early from prison to attend his wife’s funeral and is soon approached by Mr.

Wednesday (Ian McShane). The story centers on a war between the Old Gods—representing tradition, religion and folklore—and the New Gods, shaped by modern technology, the media and online attention. Visually the series favored surreal, dream-like sequences and bold color palettes, echoing the stylistic risks of Fuller’s earlier work on Hannibal, and it helped usher in a new era of television that allowed creators to take bigger chances.

Over time the show shifted away from Gaiman’s book: minor characters were expanded, new storylines were added and the pacing slowed. Despite those changes, American Gods remains a compelling dark fantasy and is now available to stream for free on Tubi.
