Senator Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota formally announced her campaign for governor on Thursday, Jan. 29, 2026, calling for unity and decency in a state she said has been through a lot. In a gauzy, four-minute video introducing her campaign, Ms. Klobuchar praised the “resilience” of Minnesota and said she would not be a “rubber stamp” for the Trump administration while seeking “common ground” to fix problems.

“Now is our moment to renew our commitment to the common good,” she said in the video, adding, “I’m asking you to look to each other. I’m asking you to look up to the North Star and to see that there is a better future before us.” Her announcement comes as the state has been roiled by political violence, President Trump’s immigration crackdown and widespread protests after the killings of two Minnesotans by federal agents.

She opened her video by recounting the assassination of State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, a shooting at a Catholic church that killed two children, the killings of two demonstrators and the influx of thousands of federal immigration agents. She pushed back her formal announcement after federal agents fatally shot Alex Pretti during a demonstration.

Ms. Klobuchar, a longtime senator described in the campaign as a common-sense centrist with a folksy demeanor and a record of bipartisanship, begins the race as the heavy favorite and is unlikely to face a serious primary opponent.
