Amy Madigan won best supporting actress for Weapons. She had been an outsider all season but might well be the popular winner, visibly surprised and cackling and blabbering in shock. KPop Demon Hunters took best animated feature. Maggie Kang, Chris Appelhans and Michelle LM Wong tearfully accepted on behalf of all Koreans and were played off while thanking Netflix, but they beat the play-off music.

The Girl Who Cried Pearls won best animated short; Chris Lavis and Maciek Szczerbowski accepted briefly, perhaps spooked by what happened to KPop Demon Hunters. The ceremony began with Conan O’Brien’s monologue, which included a dream sequence in which he imagines that he wins an Oscar and is immediately crowned and blessed by the pope, and Josh Groban singing a song about how amazing Conan O’Brien is.

O’Brien also lauded the international community who made the nominated films.
