Holocaust survivor Andriy Korshunov, 80, and his dog killed in LA hit-and-run
An 80-year-old man and his dog were killed in a hit-and-run Tuesday night, Jan. 27, in the 4400 block of Woodman Avenue in the Sherman Oaks area of Los Angeles, authorities and local outlets said. The victim was identified as Andriy Korshunov. Korshunov, 80, immigrated to the U.S.
after the start of the Ukraine War and had also survived the Holocaust as a child, according to KTLA. His daughter Ilana wrote on a GoFundMe, "[He] survived history’s darkest chapter, only to have his life taken so suddenly and senselessly," and the fundraiser seeks help to transport his remains back to Ukraine.
Korshunov and his dog were struck by a Maserati around 11:30 p.m., KTLA and ABC 7 reported. Bystanders performed chest compressions until paramedics arrived; Korshunov was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead. KTLA reported the dog was later found dead under a nearby vehicle. Video of the incident shows the driver briefly stop and then speed off after the collision, and Ilana Korshunov told KTLA, "He didn’t help him.
He just hit and run." Los Angeles police described the car as a silver 2009 Gray Maserati Quattroporte and said investigators located the vehicle abandoned near the collision without its license plates.
