Animal Kingdom: A Crime Drama Built Around Family, Now Streaming on Netflix

Adapted from the Australian film of the same name, Animal Kingdom ran for six seasons on TNT, set against the sunny backdrop of Southern California. The series centers on an ensemble cast led by Janine 'Smurf' Cody (Ellen Barkin), a matriarch who disturbingly redefines motherhood.

Jake Weary and Ben Robson play her two youngest sons, Deran and Craig, while their adoptive brother Baz (Scott Speedman) leads the crew and is close with Smurf's oldest son, the mercurial Pope (Shawn Hatosy). Fresh out of prison, Pope returns home to discover the world has changed.

Smurf runs her family with an iron fist and takes in her grandson, J (Finn Cole), after his mother dies from a drug overdose. The family treads carefully around the teenager, and Pope’s mistrust of his nephew turns into full-blown paranoia. For six seasons, Animal Kingdom unravels the frayed tensions that are the bedrock of the Codys' criminal enterprise.
