Nathan Fillion said at Awesome Con that an animated continuation of Joss Whedon’s 2002 series Firefly is entering "advanced production," and that the original main cast will largely be returning — everyone except Whedon. Adam Baldwin was absent from the announcement, but Fillion confirmed he will be lending his voice; Ron Glass, who passed in 2016, of course cannot return.

Fillion added that Whedon will not be involved in the show’s production, offering only his "blessing." The decision follows accusations from 2021 that Whedon committed multiple acts of sexual harassment, allegations that were corroborated by basically every former Buffy cast member.

The animated series is being developed through Fillion’s production company Collision33 and will be produced with 20th Television Animation; Disney is the Firefly rights holder. Scripts have been finalised and the "fully assembled package" will be shopped to buyers in the near future.
