Anthony Gordon's Champions League form boosts England World Cup hopes
Anthony Gordon's 2025-26 Champions League campaign is the best by any English scorer for an English club in the competition's history. His four-goal haul in Newcastle's 6-1 win over Qarabag took him to 10 goals from nine games, a total that surpassed previous marks and helped the Magpies effectively secure a place in the last 16 as they prepare to face either Chelsea or Barcelona.
Domestically, Gordon's season has been patchy; before Newcastle's lone strike in the 4-1 loss at Liverpool he had gone over a year without an open-play Premier League goal. Even so, he remains central to Eddie Howe's attack, offering pace and energy and the ability to play inside or down the wing, and his importance has been amplified by last summer's sale of Alexander Isak.
His Champions League form contrasts sharply with his league returns. Only Kylian Mbappe can boast a better goal tally in the competition, and Gordon is outscoring the likes of Harry Kane and Erling Haaland on the continent.
