Anthropic economists have developed a measure called "observed exposure" to track how AI could reshape the workforce. The metric compares tasks large language models are theoretically capable of with the tasks people actually use Claude for at work. Using this approach, they identify the five most exposed occupations as computer programmers, customer service representatives, data entry keyers, medical record specialists, and market research analysts and marketing specialists.

The analysis finds actual AI usage remains well below theoretical capability — Claude currently covers about 33% of tasks in the Computer & Math category. AI has not yet driven a noticeable rise in unemployment for these professions, though the economists say there is suggestive evidence that hiring of young workers in those fields has slowed.

Anthropic also publishes state-level Claude usage through its Anthropic Economic Index to help spot disruption in real time.
