Are we ready for a Joss Whedon comeback?
It has been a complicated week for fans of Joss Whedon’s work. Sarah Michelle Gellar announced a planned Buffy sequel for Hulu was no longer moving forward, and details emerged about what went wrong behind the scenes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale. A much‑hyped Firefly announcement turned out to be an animated series with the original cast, set between the TV show and the film Serenity; Nathan Fillion said in his announcement video that he had Whedon’s blessing, but the revival does not yet have a distributor.
The industry first began to turn against Whedon after accusations of inappropriate behavior on the set of Justice League, when Ray Fisher and Gal Gadot voiced complaints in 2020. A year later Charisma Carpenter described Whedon as "casually cruel," a claim later backed by Amber Benson and Michelle Trachtenberg.
His recent series The Nevers was quietly canceled mid‑season, with unaired episodes landing on Tubi, and Whedon has stayed largely out of public view even as studios weigh revivals of his properties.
