Aritzia Acquires Fred Segal, Plans Melrose Avenue Return
Aritzia has acquired Fred Segal from the Segal family and signed a lease for the former flagship at 8100 Melrose Avenue. Jennifer Wong, Aritzia’s chief executive, said the company plans to "steward and evolve this iconic brand for a new generation." Fred Segal was founded in 1961, opening its first Los Angeles store and selling jeans for $19.95 a pair when the average cost was $3.
The shop drew private school students, musicians and mothers and daughters, and helped define a Los Angeles look—low-slung denim, tight T‑shirts and Danskin leotards—while carrying early labels such as Kate Spade, J Brand and Juicy Couture alongside European designers.
The brand grew to nine California stores and locations in Switzerland, Taiwan and Malaysia at its height, but struggled as e-commerce expanded and competitors replicated its experiential approach.
