Arteta leans on David Moyes' influence over Guardiola and Wenger
Arsenal return home to face Everton, marking the first time Mikel Arteta will meet his former club while David Moyes is in charge. Arteta spent six-and-a-half years as a player at Everton — more than at any other club — and finished his playing career with five years at the Emirates.
Trained at Barcelona's La Masia and raised in Spain's Basque Country, Arteta has long absorbed varied tactical influences. Yet his spell at Goodison Park under Moyes — and the mid-2000s Everton side that was direct, tenacious and maximised limited resources — has left a clear imprint on this Arsenal team.
Both men speak warmly of the other. Moyes called Arteta "a wee bit of a moaner" who wanted things done right, while praising him as a great captain and player. Arteta has said Moyes was demanding and supportive, that he made him a better person, and described his feelings as "gratitude and admiration" for what Moyes taught him about management and the integrity the game requires.
