At least 23 people were killed and more than 100 injured in multiple suspected suicide bombings in the north-eastern Nigerian city of Maiduguri, undermining its recent reputation as a relative oasis of calm after the insurgency was pushed into rural hinterlands.

The explosions struck the post office and market areas, and the entrance to the University of Maiduguri teaching hospital on Monday evening during iftar. The post office and Monday market were regular targets at the height of Nigeria’s Boko Haram insurgency. Ten years ago this month, four separate suicide blasts in the same locations killed 58 people and injured more than 140.

The latest blasts followed an attack on a military post on the outskirts of the city on Sunday night into Monday morning. No group has claimed responsibility. Nigerian authorities said the bombings were carried out by “suspected Boko Haram terrorist suicide bombers” using improvised explosive devices.
