At least 80 children dead after missile hits school in southern Iran
Parents had just dropped their children off when bombs began to fall across the country in a joint US-Israel attack. At Shajareh Tayyebeh all-girls school in Minab, southern Iran, state-controlled media said at least 80 children had been killed and dozens more were unaccounted for.
A video shared on social media showed smoke rising from burned-out walls and debris strewn across the road, with hundreds gathered and screams audible. The report, the death toll and the video’s source could not immediately be independently verified; Persian factchecking service Factnameh cross-referenced images and concluded the footage was authentic, and Reuters said it had also verified it.
The school appears to be adjacent to a Revolutionary Guards barracks; if the toll is confirmed it would be the largest mass casualty event of the US-led attack so far. Across the country Iranians described a mix of terror and hope as strikes continued, some relieved that government buildings had been hit and others fearful of further civilian deaths.
