The Australian government has confirmed it would support any proposal to remove Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor from the royal line of succession after his arrest on suspicion of misconduct in public office. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese wrote to his British counterpart, Keir Starmer, offering Australia’s backing as the UK government prepares laws to strip him of his right to inherit the throne once a policy investigation is finalised.

Mountbatten-Windsor remains eighth in line to the throne after Princes William and Harry and their children. He relinquished his royal titles in October after new information came to light about his links to Jeffrey Epstein, and is still a counsellor of state in law, though in practice only working royals are used.

Removing him would require an act of the UK parliament and the support of the 14 Commonwealth countries where King Charles III is head of state, including Australia, Canada and New Zealand.
