Authorities warn Otways bushfire could ‘run again’ as Victoria north heats up
Authorities are warning dry conditions could cause the bushfire that ravaged Victoria’s Otways to “run again” over the coming weeks. The threat has been downgraded for now after the blaze destroyed three homes and 16 other structures when a wind change occurred during severe heatwave conditions.
Officials say milder weather has reduced the immediate risk, but they warn dry conditions remain a concern for communities in and around the Otways.
Around Walwa in the state’s north, near where fires are still burning, temperatures today are expected to climb into the 40s.
In Melbourne, women’s semi-final action will get under way at the Australian Open.
Separately, the live blog says Nationals MP Colin Boyce has announced he will challenge David Littleproud for the leadership and is expected to speak on ABC Radio; Boyce yesterday said the party was “committing political suicide” by ending the Coalition. Opposition leader Sussan Ley said Littleproud rejected the offer of talks this week, and the Nationals leader said a meeting will be scheduled once the party’s spill motion is determined.
