Avatar: Fire and Ash Passes $1.48B Global Mark After Weaker Run
Avatar: Fire and Ash fell out of the domestic top 10 this weekend, its first time doing so after a 10-week run. The film lagged behind its predecessors: the original Avatar spent 14 weeks in the top 10, seven at number one, and has a lifetime global haul of $2.9 billion, while Avatar: The Way of Water spent 15 weeks in the top 10 and grossed $2.3 billion worldwide.
Critically, the threequel received mixed reviews, sitting at a 66% score on Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics' consensus reads, "Remaining on the cutting edge of visual effects, Fire and Ash repeats the narrative beats of its predecessors to frustrating effect, but its grand spectacle continues to stoke one-of-a-kind thrills." The first and second films scored 81% and 76% respectively and both earned Best Picture nominations; Fire and Ash did not.
James Cameron has said he wants to explore other projects, and the high cost and time required to make Avatar films have left the franchise's future in limbo.
